Dalai Lama to receive ‘Freedom Conductor Award’
Source: Business Courier,6 Feb,2010 The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will present its “International Freedom Conductor Award” to the Dalai Lama during his visit to the Cincinnati area in October. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the spiritual leader of Tibet, has received more than 84 awards, honorary doctorates and prizes since 1959 in recognition of his message of peace, nonviolence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. “The Dalai Lama’s tireless efforts on behalf of Tibet – and his lifelong advocacy of freedom and peace for all people – are in the finest traditions of those abolitionists who fought for the eradication of slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries,” said Donald Murphy, president and CEO of the Freedom Center, in a news release. The awards luncheon will take place Oct. 20, at Duke Energy Center. The Dalai Lama will speak and answer questions during the event as well. Past Freedom Conductor Award recipients include Rosa Parks, Bishop Desmond Tutu and former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The latter two received the awards for their joint efforts in raising funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the South Asian tsunami. The Dalai Lama, during his visit to the area from Oct. 20-22, will also speak and meet with students at Miami University. The visit comes as part of the relationship between the university and the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, India, of which the Dalai Lama is a patron. |
