Washington, Feb 26 (PTI) Tibetan-Americans and Tibet supporters from across the US will be in Washington next week to participate in the third Tibet Lobby day, during which they would ask their Congressional representatives for concrete legislative measures to promote a political solution for Tibet.
"This is an opportunity for us to bring the voices and concerns of Tibetans inside Tibet and beyond into the offices of lawmakers in Washington, DC," said Dechen Bartso, who has travelled from Portland, for Tibet Lobby Day.
Asking for a continuing commitment to provide programmatic and political support for Tibetans in exile, Bartso said, "As a Tibetan American I have to speak up about the plight of Tibetans which unlike many other places in the world, go unseen and in garnering support and recognition for the Tibetan cause in Washington, I also have to thank our representatives".
Bartso who arrived in the US in 1996 is a paralegal with an advanced degree in economics.
Joining the lobbying activities will be some two dozen representatives of Tibetan Associations from around the country, following their biennial meeting in New York.
Tibet Lobby Day is taking place just six weeks after Chinese President Hu Jintao''s visit to Washington, where President Barack Obama pressed him for further dialogue with the Dalai Lama''s representatives and called for preservation of Tibetans'' cultural identity.
The event also takes place less than three weeks before the March 20, elections where the Tibetan exile population will choose their next leaders.
The first Tibet Lobby Day was held on March 9 and March 10, 2009, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama''s flight into exile.
